Rock your socks for World Down syndrome Day on March 21st!
World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.
It’s a day to advocate for the rights, inclusion and well being of people with Down syndrome.
The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.
“The difference between ordinary and extraordinary,
is just that little 'extra'.”
Jimmy Johnson
So don’t forget to rock your wildest, most colorful, silliest socks!
The idea is to start a conversation, so when people ask you about your socks you can tell them, “I’m wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome”.
And then you can tell them everything you want them to know about Down syndrome.
Inclusiveness starts at home!
This is a fun opportunity to talk about being extraordinary and different with your kids.
Get the silly socks out, take some pictures to post under #worlddownsyndromeday and #rockyoursocks, dance around, and color some socks!
Draw some socks yourself and color them with crazy patterns and lots of colors, or use my free printable.
And if you are looking for a great book about inclusiveness, “You are enough” is a really sweet one!
It’s the cutest picture book inspired by Down syndrome self-advocate Sofia Sanchez to encourage, inspire, and teach kids that what makes them different is what makes them special!
My daughter checked it out the school library a couple months ago and loved it!
Happy World Down Syndome Day everyone!
